Children of Many Songs: Culture, Early Childhood, and Our Future

This training will encourage reflective practices to understand, engage, and serve clients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Lecture, video, and small and large group discussions will be used to reflect on the childrearing, communication, socialization, and discipline practices among families from various cultural backgrounds.

Who should attend:
Clinicians, child welfare social workers, early childhood educators, Regional Center providers, home visitors, and others who work with children ages 0-5 and their families.

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of the complex cultural factors that influence a child’s social and emotional functioning.
  • Demonstrate increased knowledge of childrearing practices among culturally diverse families.
  • Improve attunement and responsiveness to families from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Featured Presenters:

Sam Chan, PhD is a clinical psychologist and District Chief who directs the Family and Community Partnerships Program at the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Dr. Chan has focused much of his career on early intervention with infants and young children and leadership programs for culturally/linguistically diverse populations.

Veronica Chavez, Psy.D. is a Licensed clinical psychologist and clinical supervisor at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Project Heal Trauma program. Dr. Chavez specializes in childhood trauma, children in foster care, adoption related issues, and cultural implications of trauma.
